I just found out about this site recently when I ran across a Thanksgiving Day menu my husband had saved from when he was on board the ship in 1965. I told a friend about the menu and he told me about this site. My husband Ernest A. Taylor who was gmg1 when he left the service passed away on Jan. 21 1989 just five days before his 48th birthday. He had a cancer related to agent orange that spread quickly and consumed him in a very short time. I want to relate a story about him that was told by the chaplain at his funeral. Ernie was always very dedicated to our flag and noticed it more then most people do. One day him and I and our daughter were traveling past the American Legion in our home town when suddenly Ernie pulled in the parking lot and rushed to the door with us wondering what's up. He went inside and asked immediately what's wrong, why is our flag upside down? Of course everyone assured him things were OK and proceeded outside to observe what he had. It seemed the chaplain; when he hung the flag that morning had to struggle with some high winds and did not even realize he had hung it upside down. He was quite amazed that it had hung there most of the day and no one else had noticed till Ernie did. I was very touched when he told this story at Ernie's funeral and he apparently was very touched that Ernie was the one to noticed it and remembered it so well himself. Ernie was very proud of our flag; and proud to have served under it. Carolyn Taylor
