The Skipper
    In 1945 CDR Rene L. Briand attended the Maine Maritime Academy and was commisioned an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and received a Third Assistant Engineer's license in the U.S. Maritime Service in 1947.
    He augmented into the Regular Navy in 1954 and has served in the following billets: Engineer Officer, USS PATAPSCO (AOG-1), Engineer Officer LST 611, Operations Superintendent, U.S. Naval Shipyard, Charleston, S.C,, Engineering Officer, USS WADLEIGH (DDR-689), Executive Officer, USS SCANNER (AGR-5), Engineering Advisor and later as Chief U/S. Naval Mission and MAAG in the Dominican Republic, Executive Officer, USS CHARLES P. CECIL (DD-835), and 1 July 1963 assumed duties as Commanding Officer of that unit.
    CDR Briand and his wife, the former Marlene Dyke of Londonderry New Hampshire have 2 children, ages 6 and 9. The Briands presently make their home in Newport, Rhode Island.
