The Skipper       Commander GREWE was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 25 April 1929. He enlisted in the Navy in July 1948. For the next eight years he served as an Aviation Machinist Mate in several Navy Fighter Squadrons. He participated in the Korean Conflict on board USS Kearsage (CVA-33) as a member of Fighter Squadron Eleven.

      In 1956, as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class, Commander GREWE was selected from the Fleet to attend Officers Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned an ensign in August of that year.

      From August 1956 until July 1959 Commander GREWE served on board USS Holder (DD-819) in the billets of First LT., ASW Officer and Gunnery Officer. He served as Executive Officer of USS Bold (MSO-424) from August 1959 until November 1960.

      Commander GREWE served as Commanding Officer of USS Bittern (MHC-43) from December 1960 until July 1962. From August 1962 until October 1964 he was attached to Commander Key West Test and Evaluation Detachment as a Sonar Evaluation Officer.

      In November 1964 Commander GREWF: reported to Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Four Staff as Weapons Logistics Officer where he served until February 1967. His next duty was on board USS Dupont (QD-941) as Executive Officer from February 1967 until August 1968.

      From August 1968 until October 1969 Commander Grewe was Chief of Staff and operations Officer for Commander Destroyer Squadron Twenty Two. In October 1969 he reported to tje staff of Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Force in Norfolk, Virginia where he served in the Plans Division until December 1971. Commander Grewe assumed command of the USS Gearing (DD-710) on 17 February 1972 and has been recently relieved so that he may proceed to his next assignment as Commanding OffIcer, USS Charles P. Cecil (DD-835).

      Commander Grewe is married to the former Dorthy M. Saloman of CatonsvilIe, Maryland. They have three children, a daughter, Lisa and two sons, Chuck and Todd.
